waste detection 2.0 [Predictive Exp.]
Smart Bin will aid in overcoming most of the garbage related issues and make the surroundings more
beautiful.
SMART BIN
Problem Statement:
Efficient disposal of garbage is still far from reality in most of the developing countries, including India.
Our garbage disposal system is incapable of handling the waste generated from various households,
restaurants and industries. The adverse effects of inefficient waste disposal system are numerous. We
frequently encounter people burning all the garbage from overflowing bins, thus causing air pollution
and respiratory diseases. Some amount of garbage also finds its way into the water bodies affecting
their quality, making it unfit for consumption and detrimental to aquatic life. There are certain
organizations that have been entrusted with the task of garbage collection, but the direct handling of
garbage by humans exposes them to various health hazards. India’s garbage problem is very challenging
and needs immediate attention before the country drowns in garbage.
Recent study on garbage generation in Bengaluru showed that garbage generation per day increased by
1,750% in the past 15 years while the population producing the garbage grew by just 60%, thus giving it
a name “Garbage City” as opposed to “Garden City”.
Educating citizens about the hazards has been in the field for a long time now but nothing much seems
to have changed. We require a foolproof innovation that can tackle garbage woes in India efficiently.
The challenges and barriers are significant, but so are the opportunities. A priority is to move from
reliance on waste dumps that offer no environmental protection, to waste management systems that
retain useful resources within the economy. Waste segregation at source and use of specialized waste
processing facilities to separate recyclable materials has a key role. Disposal of residual waste after
extraction of material resources needs engineered landfill sites and/or investment in waste-to-energy
facilities. The potential for energy generation from landfill via methane extraction or thermal treatment
is a major opportunity, but a key barrier is the shortage of qualified engineers and environmental
professionals with the experience to deliver improved waste management systems in India.
Our Proposal:
This project proposes a Smart Bin. It is an alert system for garbage clearance- sends an alert signal to the
municipal web server / mobile for instant cleaning of dustbin with proper verification based on level of
garbage filling. It also monitors the garbage collected from every place and gives an accurate data for
future analysis.
Smart Bin is a fully automated waste collection bin with features making the process less taxing. It can
be controlled with a touch via App or by the wave of a hand. Automatic monitoring of the waste in the
bin helps waste disposal beforehand, thus avoiding overflow of waste. It can send notifications to the
user/organization setting up the bins even in offline mode. Though the Smart bin is autonomous, it’s
movements can be remotely controlled using its App. Some of the controls integrated into the App are
instruction to move around, open/close lid, amount of waste accumulated etc. In the automatic mode,
the Smart Bin is programmed to follow a fixed path. The sensors used are Ultrasonic and Infra-Red
sensors.
The Smart Bin constantly measures the garbage content with the aid of Ultra Sonic Sound Sensor in real
time. Once the bin is 90% filled, it sends a notification along with its location to the mobile phone and an
e-mail requesting to clear the contents in the bin as its almost full to the brim. After cleaning the
dustbin, the driver/cleaner confirms the task of emptying the Smart Bin with the aid of RFID Tag. RFID is
a computing technology that is used for verification process and in addition, it also enhances the smart
garbage alert system by providing automatic identification of garbage filled in the dustbin and sends the
status of clean-up to the server affirming that the work is done. In addition, a mobile application is also
made for the real time monitoring of garbage contents.
Another use case is that once a Smart Bin is filled, it sends a notification to the user to clean it up and
moves from its place to get replaced by another empty Smart Bin. Such a system also ensures timely
removal of waste, also maintaining hygiene and reducing health risks for people involved. Integrating
the Smart Bin with Cortana will enhance its features and its ability to interact.
Integrating a Machine Learning algorithm to analyze the real-time data extracted from the sensors
integrated to the bin will help in predicting future trends in terms of garbage generation for different
areas. The data can be used to decide the number of bins required in any area, the shortest route to
that area, frequency of garbage collection visits and so on to make system as efficient as possible.
Conclusion:
Smart Bin will aid in overcoming most of the garbage related issues and make the surroundings more
beautiful. Installing such a network of Smart Bins will curb the garbage menace and help us take
proactive decisions based on the predictions. This is a much needed make over to the waste
management system and will prove to be a significant step towards building a Smart City.
